Bernabeleva established in 1923, is today one of Spain’s most dynamic producers. produces a range of complex, highly perfumed wines that smoothly play power off finesse, in a style that’s reminiscent of the best producers of France’s southern Rhône valley. There’s often an intriguing wildness to these wines, but never any sense of rusticity, and their tannic structures are on the delicate side, making them enjoyable soon after release.
''Quite gamey and interesting on the nose. Really quite fine and delicate. Very appetising. Maybe not for long ageing but great fun.'' Jancis Robinson (Previous Vintage Review)
Soaring perfume of red fruits, violets; just so much interest and deliciousness here. The palate is layered but powdery fresh, with the same notes as the nose and fine tannins. It stands out for its superb purity and finesse.
''Grenache does superbly well in Australia, but where I am really excited about drinking the variety from is Madrid's high country DO. Old vines, elevation, rugged vineyards, old school winemakers, some new-schoolers but most all just wanting to show us a pure expression of the variety from their place. Indeed, for mineral-laden red wines of bright fruit and ease of drinking, Madrid DO grenache has to be right, right up there in the list. This is killer gear right here.'' Mike Bennie
